Aida Fabric Guide: Choosing the Right Count for Your Cross Stitch Project
Everything you need to know about Aida fabric for cross stitch — counts, sizes, colors, and how to choose the right Aida cloth for your project.

What Is Aida Fabric?

Aida cloth is a specially woven cotton fabric designed specifically for cross stitch and other counted needlework. Its distinctive structure features evenly spaced holes arranged in a precise grid, making it easy to see exactly where to place each stitch without marking the fabric yourself.

The fabric was named after an 1871 opera by Verdi (a popular reference in the 19th century needlework world) and remains the most widely used fabric for cross stitch today.

Understanding Aida Count

The "count" of Aida fabric refers to the number of stitches per inch. A higher count means smaller holes and finer stitches; a lower count means larger holes and bigger stitches.

11-Count Aida

With 11 stitches per inch, 11-count Aida has the largest holes and produces the biggest individual stitches. This makes it ideal for very young children learning to stitch, or for people with limited eyesight. A 100×100 stitch design measures about 9.1 inches on 11-count.

Best for: Beginners, children's projects, large-scale decorative pieces.

14-Count Aida

The most popular choice for cross stitch, 14-count is the standard beginner fabric. It has 14 stitches per inch, producing a finished stitch size of about 2mm. A 100×100 stitch design measures 7.1 inches — the sweet spot for most projects.

Best for: Beginners, everyday projects, samplers, and standard-sized designs.

16-Count Aida

A step up in fineness, 16-count allows for more detail in the same physical space. A 100×100 stitch design measures about 6.25 inches. It requires slightly better eyesight or magnification but is still very manageable for most stitchers.

Best for: Intermediate stitchers who want more detail, portrait-style designs.

18-Count Aida

At 18 stitches per inch, 18-count Aida is significantly finer. A 100×100 stitch design measures only 5.5 inches. This count produces highly detailed, professional-looking results but requires patience and good lighting. Many advanced stitchers prefer 18-count for realistic photo conversions.

Best for: Experienced stitchers, photo-realistic portraits, fine detail work.

22-Count and 28-Count Aida

These fine-count fabrics are used by expert stitchers for miniature work and extremely detailed designs. A 100×100 stitch design on 22-count measures just 4.5 inches. Magnification is generally required.

Best for: Expert stitchers, miniature ornaments, framed fine art pieces.

Aida Fabric Colors

Aida cloth comes in a wide range of colors beyond the classic white:

  • White — the classic choice, shows all colors clearly
  • Ivory / Antique White — slightly warm tone, ideal for vintage-style designs
  • Black — creates dramatic contrast for bright or metallic thread colors
  • Light Blue, Pink, Yellow — popular for baby and nursery designs
  • Natural / Linen — earthy tone that works well for botanical and nature themes

The fabric color affects how your finished piece looks. White fabric makes colors appear bright and vivid; ivory adds warmth; black makes colors pop dramatically. Choose your fabric color before finalizing your thread palette.

How Much Fabric Do You Need?

Always cut your Aida fabric larger than your design. A good rule: add at least 3 inches (7.5 cm) to each side of your stitch count dimensions. This gives you enough border for framing or finishing.

Formula: Fabric size = (Stitch count ÷ Fabric count) + 6 inches

Example: A 140×140 stitch design on 14-count needs (140 ÷ 14) + 6 = 10 + 6 = 16-inch square of fabric.

Preparing Your Aida Fabric

Before stitching, prevent the edges of your Aida from fraying by finishing them with one of these methods:

  • Masking tape — quick and temporary, ideal for short projects
  • Overcasting — hand-stitched or machine-stitched edge treatment, permanent
  • Hemming — folding and stitching the edge under, creates a clean finish
  • Fray-check liquid — brush-on solution that seals the fabric edge instantly
